With the perspective of (quite a lot of) time it's interesting to see what has lasted from the Big Bang punk explosion in the 70s and what hasn't. The Damned have, which is no doubt why I still play their records after all these years. Blackout was a great way to start; then into New Rose, and most of the favourites (including Lemmy's, apparently) to follow. At one point Sensible posed a question for the crowd: "keyboards are acceptable in a punk band, discuss"; the answer to which is yes, a punk band can do whatever it wants, that was part of the point; but it would be better if you could actually hear the keyboards, which are fantastic in some Damned songs. At least you could hear the keyboards in History of the World. Most of the time. But even when you couldn't, it was worth having keyboards in the band just to watch Monty and his hair jumping up and down with childlike joy at the sheer fun of it all. Sensible was having so much fun playing his guitar lying down that the roadie had to help him get back up again. In fact fun sums it all up quite nicely. Even the bit where the show might not go on, depending on whether the thrower of the second plastic cup of beer owned up or not, was quite fun in a funny sort of way. He never did own up; but the bloke who threw the first one did, and that seemed good enough for the kindergarten teacher who had been deputised by Sensible to lecture the crowd about its poor behavioiur. "But it's a punk concert!" said the bloke in amazement as he was led away. "We're all grown up now" she replied from the stage. The evidence on that score was however decidedly mixed, on stage as well as in the crowd. But the show Sensibly went on, one great song after another, culminating splendidly with Smash it Up. Had he still been in the venue, the ejected punk could have responded at this point to Sensible's keyboard question with one for Sensible to ponder: when your signature tune is Smash it Up, and you stop the concert because someone has tossed a plastic cup of beer onstage, is your moniker no longer ironic?
