The organisers of the first annual 'No Depression' music festival could not have wished for a better event!
The North West produced cracking weather - bright sun (and hot nearing (90degF) with only the slightest of breezes. The ease of arrive at the venue was surpassed by the comfortable surroundings and intelligent layout of the venue. State-of-the-art staging ringed by a lush grass amphitheatre. Just beyond, all the amenities a punter would need. Efficient bar service, classy catering, copious toilet facilities and interesting vendor stalls.
I arrived late in the day due to another event proceeding - but I was extremely lucky to be well acclimatised by the time Iron & Wine performed one of the best solo folk sets I have ever enjoyed - and based on the crowd reaction, he had been proceeded by a fine list of local support artists and bands. The programming should be commended, as should the stage management as the show ran exactly to the advertised run times.
But the real star of this show was of course the outstanding Gillian Welch - words do not do her justice, a legend of the modern blue-grass era, a true talent... we danced, we sang, we cried at times. She played all her hits, and some fun new items in there too.
All-and-all I have to give this event full marks based on my enjoyment, and that of nearly 5,000 other punters whom I have no doubt will return to No Depression in 2010.
As should YOU!!!
