Lloyd and his able ensemble gave us a great night out, playing both new and reworked classics over a 2 hour set. The smooth vocals accompanied by guitars, banjo and/or mandolin enlivened the aging interior of the Mercury Theatre. Whilst there was no hint of the sneer that you might have expected from a young Lloyd, this more mature incarnation still delivered a fair share of dark 'story like' songs enveloped in beautiful melodies. There is still plenty of passion in the 'old boy'. Most of the material had a folksy, almost country feel to it. There was also plenty of light hearted banter between songs, along with encouragement to buy the new album 'Broken Record' - I did, and it is very good (even my wife likes it). If you want an enjoyable night out, and prefer foot tapping & clapping to pogoing in a mosh pit, do go and check it out - you won't regret it.

This was a fantastic performance by a true entertainer. The songs from the back catalogue were always going to be well received, and the new tracks were impressive as well. However it was the banter between songs that revealed some real character and warmth to Lloyd Cole's performance. Anyone can play their greatest hits and there are many horrendous examples doing just that. But this was a show by a great songwriter, storyteller and performer. His is ridiculously funny. I listened to the album all the way back to Tauranga and am now dying to see him pay his songs with a full band!!!
Well worth the 3 hour drive and 27 year wait.

The sound system was brilliant. For once our ears weren't assaulted and we could actually hear Lloyd's voice and the instruments.He played a mixture of new and old songs.
He talked to the audience and had a great sense of humour. He was encouraging us to buy his CD's which we did as we wanted him to climb the charts.At the end of the concert,he came out and signed copies of the CD' s and willingly had photos taken with his female fans.
The only negative was the airconditioning at the Mercury Theatre.There didn't seem to be any and it was a hot humid Auckland night.

Personally , I had only vaguely heard of Lloyd Cole as my husband was a keen fan in the late 80's during his time in London. I decided this would be a touch of nostalgia , so bought him tickets for a Xmas present. I appreciate excellence in any field , but his was pure genius in the form of songwriting and musicianship . Quite obviously all three musicians are totally passionate and it was a pleasure to see and enjoy. I loved the dry humour ..
Shame about the parking fiasco afterwards. About 20 concert goers were towed away on an area that wasn't adequately signed outside the Asian Food Market. Be warned Mercury concert/ theatre goers. We all had to pay $250.00 to recover our cars from a towing company that treated us all appallingly.

Just one deprssing song after another! no backing band-just 2 accompanying guitars,and cliche lyrics galore1 Very disappointing.
Show was all about promoting his new album of lame tunes.

Saturday night's performance in Auckland was fantastic; even better than we had anticipated. Very relaxed approach and good to see that Lloyd has retained his sense of humour!
Music was brilliant; if you haven't already booked your seat for either Wellington or Napier I urge you to do so!
The only down side was that the Mercury Theatre only accepted cash for purchasing the CD and we didn't have any. Take cash with you if you want to buy "Broken Record" just in case .
Looking forward to his next tour!

I have been a huge fan of Lloyd Cole since University days, so this was a real treat. With just Lloyd and two American guitarists on stage, this was a small, intimate affair with some truly beautiful and heartfelt renditions of the classics and a few new songs as well. The theatre setting at the Mercury Theatre worked really well, providing a comfortable setting to listen to Lloyd's superb lyrics and some absolutely gorgeous guitar work. Pretty cool to be able to meet the man himself signing CDs after the gig too. A nice touch. Thanks Kurt Shanks for bringing him to NZ!! And an absolute bargain at $54.50 per ticket.

It is amazing what one man with an exceptional voice can do with his guitar and two other backing guitarists. Who said you need a full band to create such amazing music- highly recommended, especially in the intimate Mercury Theatre! Bring on more shows like this x

The boys played great BUT surely a better venue could have been found ? The Mercury really looked tired and smelt of old boys scout meetings or something similar .... to the point where even Mr Cole remarked about it - BUT nevertheless it was a most enjoyable night and a blending of old and new kept us all entertained. WELL DONE MR COLE and FRIENDS !!

I saw Lloyd Cole on his two previous solo visits to Auckland, both at "pub" venues" which were not suited to one man and an acoustic guitar.
This time the venue was much more appropriate; Cole himself comenting "Its like me, a little worse for wear". It was great to be in a theatre where you could see and hear the preformer in relative comfort (except for the heat!).
Cole was backed by the two man "small ensemble" on acoustic guitars, mandolin and banjo (instruments newly cool thanks to Mumford and Sons?). They were clearly comfortable with each other, sharing onstage banter with themseleves as much as the audience.
Cole deliverd all the "hits" and a fair sampling from his recent "Broken Record".
A very enjoyable show.

What a treat to go see a singer who still has way with words and to enjoy them just as much live, as when you listened to them from a recording.
The songs might be from the 1980's onwards, but they are still as pertinent today as they were then.

Another great performance from Lloyd cole, warm and personal.
Economical in non-musical interaction with audience Cole but totally engaging.

I have a confession - I won the Ticketmaster competition they ran when tickets went on sale. We got to go backstage (small!) and meet Lloyd. He signed a copy of the new boxset and gave it to us as the prize and then chatted for 10 minutes. Given that happening, I'm sure you can guess the way this review is going?
We saw him in 2007, same venue (Al's Bar - great venue) and he was just as good last night. He is shy by nature so not too many stories or chatting but there was a bit and people responded well. A couple of idiots in the audience who liked the sound of their own voices didn't spoil it for the rest of us, and Lloyd ignored them. Great selection of songs, wonderful lyrics of course, good sound (although Lloyd was concerned it wasn't), and great singing. He says he's planning to come back with band and do bigger venues. Superb.... A real nice guy who needs more recognition as a wonderful singer-songwriter. There again, maybe a second shot a huge fame (a' la Commotions) might change him? We don't want that...... :))
