This was more like boys having fun.
There seemed to be a lack of intensity, (smiles 'all round') and staged fights at times. I mean US and Canadian players do play together for the Anaheim Ducks for example.
The players didn't know the rules (ie not standard NHL format rules) and the comperes were impossible to understand. Speaker system and their hype didn't do it for me.
I checked on the internet and none of the players were current Team Canada, or Team USA players, and realistically given their pay-day for this trip it is unlikely the big boys would give up their day job for a soiree down-under!! However the were AHL, ECHL, or NHL (or lesser players) - they could clearly play, No 12 for USA and a great skater ex Canada.
All that said, it was a great spectacle, something I had wanted to see all my life - but still don't feel quite satisfied as this was not a 'real fight'. (like the Nationals were in Alexandra last w/e). Just not the real deal. It was entertaining, skilful, a great effort to get this to NZ, and if it creates interest in the sport in NZ, and we see better and better games here, this was a very good start. The deal was well presented. It just gains a "recommended rating", but the real deal would certainly get a 4+ rating.
