What a great night - front row seats, a huge line-up of talented musos, a well-balanced sound system and a chilled out audience determined to relax and enjoy with one of Auckland's favourite prodigal sons. The Powerstation scrubbed up well - although OSH wouldn't recommend pitch black lighting and sudden steps (esp. for folks in full cocktail kit).
The urbane Mr Johnson was enjoying himself hugely, and as an audience member, that's what I like. He's an entertainer to the bone, dispensing largesse in the form of cocktails from the on-stage bar and his well crafted and energetically performed tunes. He didn't stint. This was a packed night of much loved classics and newer material, delivered by a man at the peak of his powers. He was supported by a top notch line-up of backing musos and singers. The horn section was pure class, although they sadly got a little buried in the mix.
'Friends' ranged from folksy Flip, who (thanks to a thoughtful intro) got heard as the audience respected her quieter sound, to cross-over Will Martin. Neither is my thing, but much respect for sheer musicianship. IMO Martin should stick to the pop divas (e.g. Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Meatloaf, Tony Hadleigh) and stay away from edgier stuff.
Overall this was a great night out. Greg Johnson rocked the house for pretty much a solid three hours, including a generous encore. Recommended.
